CD Review by Scott Yanow
Rating: 4.5 Stars

Drummer Brooke Sofferman is as talented a writer as he is a drummer. His original music features complex time signatures, unusual rhythms, tricky chord changes, unexpected development, constant surprises, and close attention paid to dynamics, and is both thoroughly unpredictable and ultimately logical. Sofferman's quintet utilizes players who are familiar with his music, which is fortunate because this is not jam-session material. While trumpeter Phil Grenadier and saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi take consistently impressive solos, guitarist Norm Zocher (whose style at times recalls both John Scofield and John Abercrombie) often takes honors. This stimulating set of modern music is easily recommended to listeners wanting to hear 21st century jazz.

Here's a 4 star Downbeat review and a few others from my last CD:

"Brooke Sofferman hits the jackpot with One Stone, Two Birds (Summit Records 377; 71:49; ****). Working as the Sofferman Perspective, and emanating from the Boston area, Sofferman ignites a spark for saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, trumpeter Phil Grenadier and guitarist Norm Zocher. Motifs are built upon tantalizing harmonic expansions, elongated ostinato grooves and catchy hooks." Downbeat

"....With equal parts rhythm, melody and harmony, the Brooke Sofferman Perspective leaps straight ahead in it's quest to help shape the future of jazz." - Jim Santella, All About Jazz

"Given Sofferman's considerable composing skills, his abilities as a bandleader and arranger, his capacity to swing while also playing melodically on the kit, plus his penchant for injecting humor into the program............." - Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

"Although Brooke Sofferman is a fine drummer, on this set, he is perhaps most significant as a composer/arranger. His ten originals tend to be episodic, full of subtle surprises and very tricky rhythmically yet swinging in their own fashion and witty............Actually, there are no weak points to the group and or throwaway selections, for every moment of this CD is intriguing and a bit unpredictable. It is well worth several listens." - Scott Yanow, 4 1/2 stars on All Music Guide

Fine Whines is the 4th recording from the imagination of Boston area drummer and composer, Brooke Sofferman (It will be Brooke's 3rd CD on Summit Records) The music is complex, yet singable, and incorporates many styles of music under the guise of Modern Jazz. Joined again by longtime band members and friends Jerry Bergonzi, Phil Grenadier, Norm Zocher and Bruno Raberg, Brooke's new compositions challenge and light a fire under the feet of his cohorts, while still attaining a respect for the tradition. Every tune is full of surprises, but never sound contrived. The buzz continues to grow...............

The Sofferman Perspective will be performing Saturday, January 21st at 8pm. We will be playing in the New England Conservatory's Williams Hall, 33 Gainsborough St., Boston, MA. (It's technically Brooke's faculty recital) This show will be taped for a live DVD and will include all new compositions of Brooke's in preparation for a new CD. The line up will be:

Jerry Bergonzi- tenor saxophone
Phil Grenadier- trumpet
Norm Zocher- guitar
Bruno Raberg- bass
Brooke Sofferman- drums / compositions

It is FREE and open to the public, so please join us for some adventurous new music from the Sofferman Perspective. Also, look in the Calender section of the Boston Globe, on Thursday, Jan. 18th for a feature about the show.

The Sofferman Perspective will be playing Friday, November 4th at 8:30pm, at the Acton Jazz Cafe. We will be playing all new original material of Brooke's for an upcoming CD and the performance will be recorded for a potential Live DVD. All ages are welcome.
